The library is situated in the monastery of St. Scholastica, on the second floor of the Gothic cloister, in the northern side.

In his Rule St. Benedict imposed the reading to his monks, both by themselves and with the other Brothers, especially in some particular times of the liturgical year.

The library consists of more than 100,000 books, 380 manuscripts and 212 incunabula among which is the famous Lactantius' "De divinis institutionibus", printed " in venerabili monasterio Sublacensi" in 1465, and St. Augustine's " De civitate dei" also printed at St. Scholastica in 1467. as is well known the first printing press in Italy was established at St. Scholastica's by two Germans, Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz and the first publications were in 1465-1467. In the archives there are about 4,000 parchments and more than 20,000 paper documents.
